Tseminyu, November 5 (MExN): The Tseminyu District Chess Association (TDCA), in collaboration with the Child Welfare Committee, Tseminyu, organised the 1st Inter High School Beginner’s Chess Championship 2023 on November 4.

Altogether 22 players from seven different schools under the Tseminyu District registered for the event hosted by Christian School,  with the sponsorship of Young Rengma Entrepreneurs and some individual chess enthusiasts.

In the junior category, Kentye Kent of Baptist Higher Secondary School (BHSS) emerged as the champion. Benhilo Kesen from Don Bosco School clinched the second position, while Jochuyhulo Khing of Assembly of God School achieved the third spot.

Miluti Apon of BHSS secured the championship title in the sub-junior category, while Yhulonyu Khing of BHSS and Methawa Magh of DBS took the second and third positions, respectively. Bwenlo Kent and Soruno Magh assisted the tournament as arbiters.

Meanwhile, gracing the event as the special guest, Gwayhunle Tep, SDEO-Cum-DEO In-charge Tseminyu, emphasised the importance of chess in schools and highlighted the benefits of playing chess for every individual, irrespective of age or gender.

The chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, Tseminyu, Jetilo Apon, also spoke on the topic “Child Rights and School Safety” during the prize distribution programme.

In the closing remarks, Thonile Seb, Women Coordinator of TDCA, stated that it is the first-ever chess tournament organised for the students in the region.
