1st Inter-school basketball tournament from Oct 2-4

Kohima District Basketball Association (KDBA) is all set to hold the 1st Inter-school basketball tournament in collaboration with the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme from October 2-4 at St. Mary’s Cathedral Hr Sec school, Lerie Kohima. 

This was decided during the meeting cum game fixture held today at St Mary’s Cathedral Hr Sec school, Lerie Kohima. 

The tournament will be held under the theme ‘Catch them young’. 

The meeting was also attended by all school representatives. 

In a brief speech, Tosovi Jordan Mekro, General Secretary, KDBA, emphasized the association’s strategy to engage younger students by reaching out to high schools students. 

He said “their goal is to promote basketball as a popular sport among students, noting the growing interest in the game.” 

He pointed out the significance of physical activities for students and stressed on the need for every student to have a platform to pursue their interests. Mekro noted that while other sports receive considerable attention, basketball often gets overlooked, which is why they initiated this tournament to provide students with the opportunity to shine in the sport.

16 schools will be participating in the tournament including both boys and girls category.  

In the fixtures, Pool A for Boys includes Khedi Baptist Hr Sec School, The Vineyard Higher Secondary school, St Mary Cathedral Hr Sec School, Minister Hill Baptist Hr Sec School, Dr Neilhouzhii Kire Government middle school D khel, Fernwood School, Alderville Hr Sec School and Model Hr Sec School.

In Pool B, the schools are Stella Hr Sec School, Mount Sinai Hr Sec School, Mezhiir Hr Sec School, St John School, Charity Hr Sec School, Northfield Hr Sec School, Don Bosco Hr Sec School and Nagaland Police Central School.

The event is being sponsored by the Directorate of Youth Resources and Sports and the Birds and Bees Talk.
