The three day long 1st Nizheto Awomi Memorial Table Tennis championship commenced here today at TT Indoor Stadium under the aegis of Quasar Club in collaboration with Kohima District Table Tennis Association (KDTTA).
Altogether, 48 players including six women are taking part in the championship, which will conclude on April 27.
Gracing the inaugural function, Rato Pusa, additional director of Youth Resources and Sports, underlined the need to promote indoor games, particularly badminton and table tennis in Nagaland.
Maintaining that such fields suit the physique of the Nagas, he said the people of mongoloid race captures almost all the medals in table tennis and badminton events during the Olympic Games.
Saying that the Chief Minister of Nagaland is serious towards promoting games and sports, he urged the sportspersons to give their best effort to achieve at the highest levels of competitions.
He also urged the organisers to conduct similar tournaments even in remote districts, particularly the non-performing districts in the field of sports. The Chief Umpire for the tournament is Lhoulievi Belho.
