KOHIMA, OCTOBER 5 (MExN): Kohima Police seized approximately 20,000 suspected Yaba (methamphetamine) tablets and arrested two persons during a vehicle checking operation at Kidima Prayer Park Junction on October 5.

A press release from Kohima Police informed that police personnel intercepted a Hyundai Venue during routine checking and noticed suspicious modifications to the vehicle. A portion of the vehicle’s floor had been recently welded and freshly painted, it said. An inspection of the floorboard led to the recovery of small packets wrapped in black polythene concealed within the vehicle’s structural cavities.

Police said 10 medium-sized packets were recovered, which contained smaller packages holding approximately 20,000 suspected Yaba tablets. The seized narcotics have an estimated minimum street value of Rs 1.60 crore, based on a value of Rs 800 per tablet, police said.

The two occupants of the vehicle were arrested and identified as Nazrul Islam (36) and Deben Kumar Das (40) both from Silchar district in Assam. During preliminary interrogation, the duo reportedly disclosed that the narcotics were being transported from Churachandpur in Manipur to Silchar, Assam.

A case has been registered at Kezocha Police Station under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Further investigation is underway to trace the wider network and backward linkages involved in the alleged interstate drug trafficking, police said.
