The Music Industry in Nagaland has accelerated enormously this year even as it witnessed the participation and performances of musicians across the state at different levels throughout the year. The appointment of Theja Meru as Advisor to Task Force for Music & Arts in June this year has especially been instrumental in shaping an even more vibrant music industry.

To end the year with, the Hornbill Music Festival was, for the first time spread over 15 venues from Kisama to Dimapur, hosting more than 50 bands from across the country and abroad and maximizing performances by local musicians. All in all, Theja Meru, Advisor to TaFMA said, the Music Festival engaged more than 1000 youths including musicians, painters, sound & lights technicians, stage crew, volunteers and security personals and attracted an approximate number of  1,30,000 concert goers.

“The way things are going and shaping up for our music industry, it is very encouraging and very positive”, he noted while stating that the highlight of this year definitely has to be the visit of Dr. AR Rahman and signing a historic document of partnership with KM Music Conservatory in Chennai. Another exciting news, he highlighted was the launch of the Sunshine Orchestra Nagaland Chapter, which will be personally mentored by Dr. AR Rahman.

In the meantime, he said, the launch of Open House in all district headquarters has gone down very well especially with musicians and artistes at the grassroots level. “Now everyone has a fair chance of participating and availing platforms to grow and being discovered”, he added. Mention may be made here that Open House is a mini concert concept to identify talents at the grassroots level and was formally opened at Mon on 3rd August, and subsequently introduced in all the other districts of Nagaland.

Also for the first time, he said that the Nagaland Choir Olympics was held and in this regard, affirmed that efforts will be made to make it into an annual affair. While these are just few highlights of what TaFMA has successfully conceptualized and initiated, Meru put across that TaFMA has a road map and a game plan for the coming year. Towards this end, he further added that, “hopefully many positive and innovative actions will be taken for the welfare of the musicians, painters, dancers and design thinkers.”
