  • Initiative is carried out every five years

KOHIMA, OCTOBER 30 (MExN): The launch of the 21st Livestock Census 2024 was held today at the Directorate of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services Conference Hall in Kohima. Livestock census is a quinquennial exercise in India since 1919 and the centennial census was last held in 2019.

The livestock census involves a comprehensive door-to-door enumeration using computer-assisted personal interviewing through Android devices, replacing traditional paper schedules. This initiative is carried out every five years under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, with active participation from States and Union Territories.

The census is crucial for understanding the country’s livestock and poultry resources, collecting data on breed, age, gender, and the demographics of individuals engaged in animal husbandry. This information is essential for developing strategies for the sector’s growth and determining the allocation of funds and services required for both internal and external financing.

During the launch, Dr Achila Ao, Director of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, urged field functionaries to strive for accurate data collection in the upcoming census.

Dr N Mhonchan Shitiri, Additional Director and State Nodal Officer for Livestock Census and Integrated Sample Survey, stressed the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders, including enumerators, supervisors, district nodal officers, local administrations, village councils, student bodies, and NGOs.

The event also featured a PowerPoint presentation by Dr. Sentinungla, Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer, highlighting the census launch by Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh on October 25 in New Delhi.

The 21st Livestock Census will take place from October 2024 to February 2025, aiming to cover 474,267 households across Nagaland. The program was chaired by Dr. Imomanen Tzudir, Joint Director, with a vote of thanks delivered by Peter, Economics & Statistical Officer.
