Kohima College beat Capital College 5-1
Our Correspondent Kohima | November 2 The prestigious 23rd Classic Cup 2017 commenced here today at the Kohima Local Ground under the aegis of Classic Club Kohima. Kohima College Kohima overpowered Capital College of Higher Education 5-1 in the inaugural match. Kohima College made a brilliant start but gifted a goal for Capital College as Chuba netted a goal in the 16th minute for Capital College through a spot-kick conversion. Few minutes later, Ntsenlo Semp netted an equalizer goal for Kohima College through a penalty. Megovilie Miasalhou scored the second goal for Kohima College in the 27th minute. In the second half, Khrielazotuo Mepfhuo scored a stunner in the 41st minute and Nsamlungbe Nkie scored the fourth goal for Kohima College in the 54th minute. Megovilie scored another goal in the 61st minute and Kohima College won 5 goals to 1 at the end of the final whistle. With today’s win, Kohima College will face defending champion Barak FC on November 8 at 1:00 PM. Earlier, gracing the inaugural function as the chief guest, Linda Solo, Director, Youth Resources & Sports said that when it comes to football, Nagas are second to none. “We have observed some extra talented players of the state playing for clubs of other states like Assam and Mizoram in the ISL,” she said. She maintained that football is improving and gaining momentum year by year. She urged upon the participants to give their best with sporting spirit. “You need strength, agility, determination and quick reflexes for a game like football,” she said. Solo said most Naga players have all the qualities to make it not only in the national but also in the international level. Also stating that a lot of hidden talents are still yet to be tapped, she expressed hope that Classic Club will follow on that and take football all the way to its maximum. K Neibou Sekhose, president Classic Club said that football is a people’s game and a household name in the state, adding that. “There are 5 football tournaments in Kohima. I feel now it is up to the players whether to shine and achieve their dream and bring glory and enshrine their name in the anal of football,” he said. This year there are 35 teams vying for the championship, which will culminate on November 20. The Champion will receive a cash prize of Rs. 1.50 lakh along with a trophy and citation while the runner- up will get Rs. 80,000. There will also be individual prizes for Best Goalkeeper, Defence, Midfield, Highest scores, Player of the Tournament & Player of the People choice. The Classic Club was formed in 1994 with the motto “Aiming Higher. The Classic Cup started in 1995 in order to promote young talented footballers and to divert the mind of youth to a healthy environment, foster team spirit among participants and inculcate discipline.
