Dimapur | February 7

A total of 253 candidates from 9 political parties and independents have filed their nominations from across the state for the upcoming Nagaland State Assembly Elections.

The list was finalized and made public by the Election Commission on February 7, the last day for filing of nominations. There will be scrutiny of the nominations on Febraury 8.

Uncertainty had plagued the run up to the polls, with civil society organizations calling for deferment of polls. Political parties had seemed to echo that call in a joint declaration supporting the call on January 29.

The movement however fizzled out as parties and candidates started releasing names midway through the nomination timeline. The last two days for nomination saw a frenzy of activity, culminating in the total of 253 final nominated candidates.

This includes 42 substitute candidates who are expected to withdraw nomination by the last day of withdrawal, which is February 12.

Mokokchung registered the highest number of candidates with 48 nominations. Pughoboto Election District registered the least with 3 nominations. Tamlu Assembly Constituency registered the highest number of nomination with 8 candidates.
