National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP), District Tuberculosis Centre, Mokokchung observed World TB Day at CMO’s conference hall on March 24. The programme was observed on the theme ‘Yes, we can end TB.’
Currently, there are 216 patients on treatment in District Tuberculosis Centre, Mokokchung. There are 27 Nikshay Mitra who have adopted the TB patients, which includes Mokokchung Town Baptist Church (MTBA), Doctors, officers, individuals and concerned citizens.
During the function, Longdiba Sangtam, SDO (Civil), Mokokchung in his exhortation asserted that TB is a menace and still cannot be completely eradicated, inspite of it being an age old disease. He mentioned that more than the privileged and the economically stable section, it affects the economically deprived and weaker section of people.
He encouraged everyone to give importance to it not only on the day it is observed but to combat it and help people fighting TB by contributing and adopting people with TB.
Dr Toshila Jamir, District Tuberculosis Officer, Mokokchung sharing on the significance of the day brought to light that it is a global target to end TB by 2030, thereby, reaching the Sustainable Development Goal. She mentioned of the urgency owing to the commitment of the Government of India to end TB in India by 2028, with commensurate resources to rapidly decline TB incidences and mortality in India.
She reminded all gathered that TB cannot be fought alone by the health systems. To achieve the Goal of ending TB by 2025, it is very important that everyone join hands and participate in fulfilling the gaps and thereby, contribute to the national goal of eliminating TB by 2025 as the country move towards a TB Mukht Bharat or TB free India.
Earlier, delivering the welcome speech, Dr Limatula Aier, CMO, Mokokchung said that it is not only the responsibility of the health workers but each one has a role to play as responsible individuals to eradicate the disease.
Two TB champions, namely Aosungkum and Lanurenla, who have fought the disease and cured, shared testimonies on how the District Tuberculosis Centre workers and doctors helped them in their journey.
