Atoizu, September 27 (MExN): The ‘2nd Mini Hornbill Fest’ cultural programme was hosted by St Peter’s School, Atoizu under the theme ‘Celebrating Our Roots, and Embracing Our Future’ on September 27. The festival showcased a wide array of indigenous performances and activities intended to promote cultural awareness among pupils and the wider community, stated a press release.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Dr Samuel Akho Konyak, Extra Assistant Commissioner of Atoizu emphasised the event’s significance for children, whom he described as the future leaders of Atoizu, Sumi, and the Naga community. He recounted his own upbringing to illustrate the resilience cultivated in earlier generations.
Dr Konyak defined culture as an amalgamation of language, greetings, food, games, songs, and moral values, and made a strong appeal for its preservation and promotion. This, he said, would prevent traditions from being lost and ensure future generations grow with pride and confidence.
Special events and competitions were featured, including: Yodelling, Winnowing, War Cry, Bamboo Stilt Walking, Pork Eating, Spear Kicking, Top Spinning, Indigenous Go-Karting, Earing and Mekhala Race, Heel Kicking, Bamboo Climbing, Traditional Fire Making, Folk Song, Folk Dance and Cock Fight.
The programme commenced with invocation by Akatoli Chishi, an address by Headmaster Fr Ashikho Abraham, a Cultural Attire Show, a Tiny Tots Warriors Call, a cotton-spinning demonstration by Ms Kanitoli Roseline Swu and a concluding vote of thanks.
