Labour Commissioner urges registration for social protection
Kohima, May 22 (MExN): The Department of Labour, Nagaland, in collaboration with the district administrations across various districts, is organising the second round of the special nationwide registration campaign to register platform and gig workers on the e-Shram Portal.
The campaign, which started on May 20, will conclude on May 30.
As per an official release from the Labour Commissioner, Nagaland, during the 10-day drive, on-ground registration camps will be facilitated in all districts and sub-divisional levels, in coordination with field functionaries and platform companies.
In this regard, all platform-based gig workers are encouraged to participate in the special drive, it said.
Those unable to attend a camp can also self-register on the e-Shram portal through the link: https://register.eshram.gov.in/#/user/platform-worker-registration.
According to NITI Aayog, the gig workforce in India is projected to exceed 1 crore in 2024–25 and reach 2.35 crore by 2029–30, the release stated.
Recognising the need to extend social protection to this segment, the Union Budget 2025–26 announced the registration of platform workers on e-Shram, and the first special nationwide registration campaign was launched from April 7–17, it highlighted.
The campaign is a crucial step towards providing formal recognition and comprehensive health coverage under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).
Who are gig and platform workers?
As per the release, gig workers are those engaged in hourly or part-time jobs in various sectors, ranging from catering events to software development. Platform workers are those working for organisations that provide specific services using online or digital platforms, such as delivery agents.
The key provisions of the campaign include the registration of gig and platform workers on the e-Shram portal, issuance of official identity cards, and access to AB-PMJAY, which offers a Rs 5 lakh annual health cover per family across 31,000+ empanelled hospitals, it added.
