3 days farmer training held in Tuensang

DIMAPUR, MARCH 28 (MExN): A three day farmers training on ‘Focused Horticulture Crops of Tuensang District’ was conducted for nine villages under Tuensang districtfrom March 26 to 28 at Longpang.  

A press note informed that the training was sponsored by the Central Institute of Horticulture, Medziphema, Nagaland in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Tuensang, and Eleutheros Christian Society (ECS), Tuensang.  

The main objective of the programme was to train and equip the farmers on scientific cultivation practices for the focused horticulture crops of Tuensang district for better productivity and returns. The inaugural session was graced by Dr. N. K. Patle, Deputy Commissioner (Horticulture) and Director i/c, Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), DAC & FW, Ministry of Agriculture, GOI, Medziphema, Nagaland as chief guest. He also had an open discussion with the participants where various prevailing problems of horticulture crops were addressed, giving main emphasis to the declining Citrus Orchards in the region and for which the Senior Scientist & Head, KVK, Tuensang has been asked to initiate a pilot project in collaboration with CIH, Medziphema, Nagaland to revive the orange orchards.  

During the three days technical sessions the resources persons were Tokiho Achumi, ACTO (Agronomy); Imtilemla, ACTO (Soil Conservation); Dr. Shisarenla Aier, SMS (Horticulture); Yanger Kichu, Farm Manager; Seveto Nyekha, Programme Assistant, KVK, Tuensang and Lichamo Yanthan, Assistant Horticulture Specialist, CIH, Medziphema, Nagaland.  

The various topics covered included: ‘Introduction to Nursery propagation techniques & importance of nursery accreditation in Tuensang District;’ ‘Nagaland, Organic cultivation of Naga King Chilli;’ ‘Cultivation of Ginger & its management practices;’ ‘Integrated Management of Pest & Disease in Ginger;’ ‘Background information of citrus decline & identification of symptoms;’ ‘Major causes: Biotic & Abiotic factors involved in the occurrence of disease;’ and ‘Calendar of activities for rejuvenation of citrus orchard.’  

A field visit to affected areas was also conducted and hands on demonstration on the application of Bordeaux paste and construction of low cost shed net house and bed preparation for sowing of Naga King Chilli seeds was also demonstrated.  

Certificates were distributed to all the participants along with planting materials. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Shisarenla Aier, SMS (Horticulture), KVK, Tuensang.
