3 held with suspected uranium dust in Dmp

DIMAPUR, JUNE 9 (MExN):Three persons were arrested and booked under the Atomic Energy Act by the police in Dimapur on the charge of possessing a reportedly radioactive substance.

According to the Dimapur police, the three persons, who identities were not officially disclosed, were arrested from a hotel in Dimapur on June 8. A Dimapur police official told The Morung Express that the substance, as claimed by the three accused persons, was said to be uranium dust, the origin of which was still to be ascertained.

The official declined to delve into the details of the investigation, only stating that, at this stage, it cannot be claimed that it is “uranium” pending expert analysis. He said that the substance, at the time of the arrest, was found in powdered form, sample exhibits of which will be dispatched for laboratory analysis. The police official said that a case has been registered under relevant sections of the IPC read with the Atomic Energy Act.

Other sources said that the suspected contraband was brought, reportedly, from Guwahati, by two persons, to be handed over to a contact in Dimapur. The two, a Naga and a non-Naga, along with their local contact (a Naga), were arrested from a hotel room while they were reportedly in the process of handing it over to the latter.
