A total of 317 recruits passed out from the Nagaland Police Training School (NPTS), Chumukedima on September 30. It was the 62nd batch of recruit havildars and recruit constables to pass out from the NPTS, which will be completing 50 years in November. Out of the total, 21 personnel will be recruited into service in the 15th NAP (Mahila IR), while the rest will be absorbed in the various DEF units.

The Chief Minister, TR Zeliang inspected the ceremonial attestation parade held at the NPTS ground with the DGP, LL Doungel also in attendance. As per the CM, the recruitment was a “special dispensation” or recruitment exercise exclusively for the 4 districts of Kiphire, Longleng, Mon and Tuensang.

Terming the parade as a “smart turnout”, the CM expressed hope that the recruits will prove to be equally as smart and efficient while discharging duty. The constabulary is usually the police force’s “first point of contact” with the public, the CM said, while adding, “the impression you create will be the impression the public will carry of the police (which implies) your performance as well as your behaviour will be crucial in the maintenance of law and order.” The Nagaland Police have come to be known as a brave and dedicated force, “I hope you will continue to maintain this tradition of bravery and service before self.”

While maintaining that the nature of crimes have become more complex, he added that it is pertinent for the police to keep pace with the latest developments in technology and update knowledge and skills continuously. In this context, he held that the police training school has an important role to play, where the best and the most suitable officers must be posted. He further called for refresher courses for all ranks periodically, while maintaining that simply passing out is not enough.

Maintaining that the police service is more than just an avenue for earning a living, rather he held that it should be taken as a call, a sacrifice to serve the people and the state. “While serving, one should not harbour any obligation to serve personal interests.”
