
Women outnumber male candidates in KMC and MMC

As per data released by the Office of the State Election Commissioner, a total 394 candidates filed nominations for the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections 2024. The figure was as per nominations registered in all the 39 ULBs, including the 3 Municipal Councils in Dimapur, Kohima and Mokokchung, till 4:00 pm, June 10.
Women accounted for 144 of the total candidates. The Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) had the most number of women candidatures at 19, followed by Kohima Municipal Council (KMC)- 17 and Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) at 15. Interestingly, the list for KMC and MMC had women outnumbering the male counterparts in terms of candidatures. In KMC, it was 17 women to 14 men and in MMC, it was 15 women as opposed to 14 men.
The parties in the fray included the NDPP with 142 nominations, BJP-39, Congress- 26, NPP- 18, NPF- 14, JD (U)- 9, LJP- 5, NCP- 5, RPI (Athawale)- 1. The Aam Aadmi Party was yet to have a candidate, while the total of Independent candidates stood at 135.
The window for filing nomination will close at 3:00 pm, June 11. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on June 13. The last date of withdrawal of nomination will June 18, till 3:00 pm.
