Four people were killed and four others wounded in a fatal road crash in Karbi Anglong, Assam on December 18. As per the Assam Police, the nature of the accident site pointed to a high speed collision.
The collision involved a Maruti Gypsy from Nagaland and an Assam-registered Mahindra Thar. It happened around 5:00 am. There were seven occupants in the Gypsy, which was proceeding to Mon, and two in the Thar, moving from the Silonijan side.
The police were still to ascertain the cause of the accident but according to the SDPO of Bokajan, Rustom Brahma, two occupants of the Gypsy were likely killed on impact, while the other two succumbed in hospital. The other three passengers, who included an 11 year-old survived with varying degrees of injury. They were admitted to different hospitals in Dimapur.
Brahma told The Morung Express that the driver of the Thar, identified as one Albert Basumatary, survived with injury and was later taken to Guwahati after administering initial medical treatment at the Bokajan health centre. The passenger was suspected to have absconded from the accident site right after and was yet to be traced till late evening.
Three of the deceased victims were women, all in their late 20s to early 30s, who were identified as Nzalya, Nyamshan and Neangmai B Konyak. The deceased male, who was on the steering, was identified as Langphong Konyak (35 years).
The three survivors from the Gypsy were identified as Kaiyong, Taiba and Angluh (11 years).
The SDPO said that the accident occurred in the vicinity of the Banaspaty Tea Estate, falling in between the Santipur-Japarajan segment of NH 129, under Barpathar Police Station.
“I can’t put a cause to the accident at this stage. But it appears both cars were in high speed. The road was straight. It was early morning and the weather was foggy, too,” he said.
He informed that the mortal remains of the four deceased victims were handed over to relatives after the post-mortem in Diphu, the day itself. An FIR has been lodged and investigation was on.
