WOKHA, JANAURY 27 (MExN): Close on the heels of the coal mining incident at Yanmhon area near Ruchan village where 6 person lost their lives and 4 others injured, the 40 Bhandari A/C Congress Committee expressed serious concern with regard to the unregulated coal mining practices that are taking place in certain pockets in Wokha District.

“This not only poses a serious safety hazard but also contributes to loss of biodiversity which impacts the socio-economic conditions of the people in the long run,” the Committee said in a press statement issued by Chenithung Humtsoe, Member, PCC, 40 Bhandari A/C on Saturday.

The Committee alleged that the “State Government has either ignored or is unable to regulate proper laws and acts for mining minerals.”  The absence and implementation of such regulations have thus resulted in double tragedies, for the coal mine owners and its labor forces, as well as the land owners, it added.

It maintained that the families of the deceased were deprived of deserved compensation and the owners at the receiving end as they were liable to lawful persecution.

Towards this, the Committee has urged the State Government to investigate into the tragic incident and compensate the deceased and injured workers as well as the Coal mine owners on grounds of humanitarian act.

If the State Government fails to take stock of the case at the earliest, they may also be held liable for failing to protect the rights of people as per the provision of the law of the land, it added.

The Committee, meanwhile, expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished speedy recovery to the injured individuals.
