5 innocent Nagas killed

Sebastian Kamei

Five innocent Nagas were killed by the Meghalaya police at 6.am on 05.10.05 while going to Shillong by Tata Sumo. The Meghalaya police claimed that they were killed in an encounter which makes the public again recollect the raise of queries by democratic lovers “must we be what the administrator says we are?”

The police version is that they were carrying arms and was killed in the encounter. The queries that really keep us wondering are how can there be an ambush and no bullets or scratch mark in any parts of the vehicle they traveled? Secondly, if it was an ambush why were the bodies decompose rapidly within 24 hrs of the ambush and lots of bruises were visible in their body as a clear result of tortured? Thirdly, if they were carrying arms why did they never shoot back instead of making themselves an easy target for the police to kill all of them who were assumed arm carriers? And lastly aren’t we supposed to be aware that there is cease fire going on.

It is a serious matter, which needs to be brought to the notice about the double standard of the Government of India. Killing of innocent Nagas during the period of cease-fire and it’s time we woke up and raised our voice against such inhumanly atrocities committed by the Indian arm forces to innocent civilians.

The Nagas who were killed are reported as 1.Chupa, 2. Imsang, 3.Mitson, 4.Martin, 5. Victor. They were stopped by the police, arrested in cold blood, tortured and then killed. Till now even the deceased families have not been allowed to take the body for proper cremation. It is still in the police custody and has started to decompose as reported. Due to the royal treatment received from the Meghalaya police (as always by the Indian police rule) the inner parts of their body were badly marred and distorted. Even the Sumo which they were traveling in is still with the police intact.

It now has become such a common fashion for forcing the public to believe whatever the authority holder says. It’s now a fashion for the Police all over the system states to proclaim that what they say is true and the public must believe whether we like it or not because there seems no other way. Our democratic rights are being robbed right in-front of us and we are destined to remain silent, the values of human lives are strung down as worth less just because of an administrator like such. The media and the administrators remained maimed on this subject in every incident. We wonder why it is always the Nagas that are destined to suffer in such cases. Tracing back from the negotiations of the cease fire, we can recollect how many barbaric schemes were weaved in a double standard way.

As a Nagas, we the NSUD (Naga Student Union Delhi) strongly condemned this barbaric behaviors and highhandedness while the cease fire is going on and when the entire world are grasping for a span of peace. We appeal to all the authority and the Indian government to look upon this matter seriously and give the right justice immediately. We appeal to Human rights activist and all the civil society’s and the nation to raise their voice against this act so that there never will again be another ‘fake encounter’ and lead to the lost of more innocent lives.

Let the justice be sought and given. If not, it will be too late one day to wake up and realized that the situation has gone out beyond the hands of both the nation.
