At least 57 people have been arrested in drug and alcohol-related cases in Mizoram last week, an official of the state Excise and Narcotics department said on Sunday.
With this, 134 people have been arrested in two weeks since February 16, department spokesperson Peter Zohmingthanga said. He also said that various drugs and illicit alcohols, 1.473 kg of heroin, 14.5 kg of cannabis (ganja), 404 tablets of Tramadol, 4 vehicles and substantial litres of locally brewed liquor and branded liquor were seized by the department during raids between February 16 and 29. The official also said that at least 16 illegal liquor manufacturing units were destroyed at Phunchawng area in the outskirts of Aizawl during a raid.
Earlier, 77 people were arrested in drug and alcohol related cases between February 16 and 21.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the state police had seized seized 39 lakhs tablets of methamphetamine worth over Rs 97.5 crore at Vairengte along the Mizoram-Assam border. It was the greatest drug haul made this year, according to the police.
The contraband items, packed in polythene packets, were transported in a Silchar bound truck.
