Kohima, December 28 (MExN): The three-day long 57th General Conference of the Mimi Students’ Union (MSU) commenced on Saturday at Mimi village under the theme, “Educate, Empower, Evolve.”

The conference marks the beginning of a new tenure focused on student empowerment, cultural preservation, and community development.

The inaugural programme was graced by Tsupithong Yimchunger, Economics and Statistics Officer, Directorate of School Education, Nagaland, as the Special Guest.

He congratulated the HSLC and HSSLC achievers from Mimi village, with special mention of Resomong, HSLC topper from Mimi, and Kamjila, HSSLC achiever.

As a mark of respect and encouragement, gifts were also presented to the eldest male and female members of the village.

In his address, Tsupithong shared his experience of visiting over 800 villages across the state and expressed concern over rising mortality rates, demographic imbalance, and the closure of government schools, referring to developments since PCP 1974.

Emphasising cultural preservation, he noted that responsible population growth is vital for safeguarding traditions.

He also highlighted the importance of inter-community collaboration, skill development in the modern era, and cautioned students against mobile phone addiction, urging them to use technology responsibly and productively.

The inaugural programme was attended by R Achimpong, Village Council Chairman (VCC), Mimi; Gaon Burahs (GBs); Village Council members; the Executive Chairman of the Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC); the Pastor of Mimi Baptist Church; students, elders, and prominent leaders from Mimi village and neighbouring areas.

The programme began with a welcome address by Yakso M, President, MSU, who outlined the vision of the Union and urged students to uphold unity, discipline, and a strong sense of social responsibility.

Makezho, Executive Chairman Yimkhiung Tribal Council and Throngmuli, President, Mimi Circle Joint Council, also spoke at the event.

The Special Guest’s entourage included the Head Gaon Burah of Phuvkiu village, VCC Phuvkiu, and representatives from the Pungro Sports Association and Saramati Nexus Club, Pungro, whose presence added significance to the occasion.

The programme was compered by Mary, Cultural Secretary, MSU, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Phosangwo, MSU official, who expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, participants, and supporters for making the inaugural programme a success.

The inaugural programme concluded with a collective resolve to uphold discipline, preserve cultural identity, and empower students for the sustainable development of Mimi village and the Yimkhiung community.
