The 5th Zasinihu Memorial Trophy 2019 under the aegis of Western Angami Students' Union (WASU) got underway here today at WAPO Ground.


In the first match, defending champions Adroit Boyz, Sechü Zubza defeated SDO United, Sechü Zubza 6-0.


Phoenix B, Jotsoma defeated Khonoma Students' Union by 5-3 in the second match while Ferret FC, Jotsoma overpowered Jotsoma Students' Union 1-0 in the last match of the day.


The trophy is an acclaimed football tournament of Western Angami region played biennially under the aegis of WASU in tribute and remembrance of Late Zasinihu (Ahu) Zinyü, the first president of Naga Students’ Federation.


Gracing the inaugural function as special guest, Commissioner & Secretary for Works & Housing, Rovilato Mor, IAS  lauded the family of late Zasinihu who had revived the trophy, where the footballers were given platform to showcase their skills and ability. He was hopeful that the tournament will go a long way in bringing better understanding and strengthen the bound of unity and friendship among the Western Angami people.


Earlier, WASU president Bisevi Nakhro led the opening ceremony while organizing committee convenor Neidilhoutuo Sechü delivered the keynote address. ASU games & sports secretary, Khrieketoukho Rino administered oath to the participating teams.


15 teams have registered for this tournament, which will continue till November 9.


The champions of the tournament will receive a cash prize of Rs 40,000 while runner-up will get Rs 25,000. Semi-finalist will receive Rs 10,000 each.
