62 trainees upgrade skills

Altogether 62 Naga trainees from border areas of Indo-Myanmar have completed upgrading their skills for livelihood in the field of welding/fitting, tailoring and bamboo/wood crafts under the Border Area Development Programme (BADP) Capacity Building Programme 2016-17.  

A valedictory function of BADP Capacity Building Programme cum Distribution of Machines/Tools to the successful trainees was held at Nagaland Tool-Room Training Centre, Dimapur on Monday.  

Presenting an activity overview of the Department of Under Developed Areas (DUDA) under which BADP falls, Thepfuzakie Angami, Project Officer (BADP), DUDA informed that 30 male completed six months Multi Skills in Welding with most job placements assured at NTTC. In collaboration with Craft Council Nagaland, three months Vocational Training on Bamboo/Wood Crafts and Tailoring was also imparted to 13 male and 19 female at M/s Pusa Crafts Centre, Jharnapani, Dimapur and M/s Savino Crafts & Research Development Center, Kuda Village, Dimapur.  

“The main objective of these trainings is to develop/upgrade the skills of these villagers to enable them to make their livelihood/self reliance,” he added.  

During the period of their training, the trainees were also taken on exposure trips to neighbouring States of Assam and Meghalaya besides visiting other functioning units and training institutes in Dimapur.  

Speaking as the Chief Guest, Advisor, DUDA & NEPED, S. Pangnyu Phom urged the successful trainees to utilize their skills and equipments to earn livelihood and simultaneously teach others in their area about what they have learnt. He said there was no dearth of fund from the government side to provide vocational trainings but rued that the youngsters were showing less enthusiasm. He thanked the Government of Nagaland and major Naga tribes for facilitating such benefits to the Eastern Nagas for their upliftment.  

NTTC, Dimapur, Principal, Petehietuo encouraged the trainees to utilize their skills wisely and sincerely earn their livelihood.  

The successful trainees were provided with welding machines and accessories, carpentry sets with kits, air compressors, drilling machines, electric planners, electric hand cutters and foot driven sewing machines with kits as per their training. The tools and equipments were provided to the successful trainees to support them in establishing their livelihood set up.  

Among the 17 BADP States in the country, Nagaland is one of the first States to start with Human Resource Development (HRD) activities under Capacity Building/Skill Development Programme. It was also informed that the allocation of Capacity Building Programme has been enhanced to 10% from 5% w.e.f 2014-15 onwards by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Border Management, Government of India.
