The opening ceremony of 66th Kohima Village Sports Meet hosted by Kohima Village Youth Organization (KVYO) was held at Kewhimia Ground, Kohima on January 13. Abu Metha Vice President, Athletics Federation of India Advisor to Chief Minister of Nagaland Chairman, IDAN as chief guest.

In the next 5 years, Metha said that the sports industry has projected to reach an enormous 500 billion dollars. He encouraged everyone to be a part to strive towards their dreams and ambitions. In this regard, he also said nothing is impossible and beyond to achieve and any goal.
Today, Metha said the scope for sportspersons have ever increased with access to state of the art infrastructural facilities to train and build one's career.

Sports has evolved into an industry for earning a livelihood, therefore, he urged the youth to pursue their strengths and strive to excel, with the goal of representing the state and eventually India in the future.
He added that many or most distinguished personalities did not come from privileged background but through hardwork and determination. Metha called sportspersons especially Athlete to focus on their objective.

He said the Northeastern region has made a lot of contribution in the sports arena bringing laurels to the country as well.
However, lamented that Nagaland has not received the same attention as the others in this regard. But he expressed hope for a change in this narrative going forward.

Metha said that in the recently concluded Northeast Olympic, Nagaland secured 39 medals, and expressed hope that the performance in the upcoming years will bolster. He called to strive in our potential while adding that we have the ability to reach greater heights.
During the ceremony, Medoselhou Keretsü and Kohima Village Chairman, Helevio Solo spoke about the KVSA formation and sports which was incepted on 1945.
Kohima Village Youth Organization President, Vituonyü Khezhie, noted that the significance of this sports event lies not only in athletic but to also in the foster understanding and cultivating friendships. He said that the event, which originally commenced in 1944, was organised this year with the intention of reflecting on its foundational principles and looking forward to nurturing stronger bonds and relationships among the participants.

The function began with the auspicious lighting of the NVSA torch by Menuosetuo Yiese. The torch was carried across the village by accomplished athletes who had made their mark in the previous KVSA meets, including Medozhatuo Rutsa, Vizovor Liezietsu, Kezhaseluo-o Pienyii, Neiketuolie Belho, Rüduolhounuo Belho, Kehezolie Mere, Keneisezo Dzüvichii, Khriezelhounuo Keyho, and Menuosetuo Yiese. This year the KVSA Flag bearers were Menuokhrielie Solo, Kedilelhou Solo, Kevicü Rutsa, Vilietuo Rutsa, Rüüvolie Kire, Petekhriezo Yiese, Vivor Kesiezie, Mhasiletuo Yhome.
The torch relay was followed by the KVSA theme song, composed in 1994 (the golden year of KVSA) by Vilhoukhoü Solo. This was accompanied by a drill display by the Kohima Village Students’ Union, with the enthusiastic participation of hundreds of students.
The sports meet will culminate on January 20.
