MLA Imkong L Imchen, former Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) and Ao Senden president today stated that the mechanism of governance and their action should reflect the basic interest of the people, but the recent notification for Urban Local Bodies’ (ULB) elections by the government did not reflect the interest of the people.
He was addressing the culminating programme of the 67th general conference of AKM at Changtongya village in Mokokchung.
Imchen said that the present municipal and town council elections infringe on the very tenet of Article 371 (A) of the Indian Constitution, especially with reference to the provision of Naga customary practices and its usage.
“If you want to do something for the people you should prioritize to discover the basic interest of the people,” he asserted. “It is rather unfortunate that Naga public should be given to agitate to such an extent, which I found that it is rather a personal ego than people's interest.”
He also appealed to the 67th AKM general session to ponder over the issue of the usage of ranges by the Aos which was given during the British rule.
