The weeklong 67th Kohima Village Sports Association (KVSA) Meet 2026 under the aegis of the Kohima Village Youth Organization (KVYO) made a colourful start on January 10 at Khuochiezie (Kohima Local Ground) under the theme “Kevimerü” and The Great Indian Barbet as the mascot.

The meet, which will continue till January 16, was formally declared open by Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, advisor, School Education & SCERT, Govt of Nagaland.
In his address as Chief Host, Dr Yhome described the meet as a platform where villagers come together in unity and harmony, setting aside their differences.

Encouraging the youth to take care of their health, he stressed the importance of regular exercise and healthy diet.
He further highlighted the potential of sports as a means of livelihood and urged everyone to remain humble and work hard.
Also addressing the inaugural ceremony, Helievio Solo, Chairman, Kohima Village Council (KVC, spoke about the formation of the KVSA, noting that Kohima Village is about 709 years old.

Solo recalled that the KVSA which was established in 1944 at Thevokemouzie.
He said that the sports meet has been conceptualised to promote harmony and unity among the community.

Before the inaugural programme, the ceremonial torch lighting took place at Thevokemouzie.
The prelude programme was led by KVYO Vice President, Mhasimhalie Mathew Yhome and invocation prayer by Rev Vichülie Kelio, Pastor CRC KV.
KVYO President Er Medozhazo Rutsa delivered presidential address while Kohima Village Head GB Medo-o Keretsü pronounced traditional blessings.

The inaugural ceremony featured the march-past of contingents, lighting of the LXVII cauldron, rendition of the KVSA theme song, hoisting of the Khel flag, veterans’ relay, and oath-taking ceremony.
The weeklong mega sports event will be marked by athletics, volleyball, basketball, football, cricket, badminton, table tennis, shooting and wrestling.

The meet will conducted at Khuochiezie, Kewhimia Indoor Stadium (Ziekezou), IG Stadium (Rüleizou), Kohima Indoor Stadium, Meriema Village Ground and Don Bosco Higher secondary ground.
