72 Micro Hydro projects identified

Kohima, July 19 (MExN): Nagaland continues to face acute power shortage. By the end of the 11th Plan the demand would touch 200 MW and more problems are anticipated in meeting the demand unless some major hydro projects are taken up immediately, the annual report of the Power department has cautioned.

The department has  identified various potential hydro projects and the three most viable, it said, include 150 MW Tizu–Zungki HEP (Kiphire), 140 MW Dikhu HEP (Mon/Longleng) and 40 MW Yangyu HEP (Mon/Longleng). The proposal for two projects Tizu- Zungki HEP and Dikhu HEP with its total estimated capacity of 290 MW is now under examination at the government level for development under a joint venture with private firms, the report said.

The government is also setting up a coal-based thermal power project in Nagaland and outside Nagaland in a joint venture with a private developer, M/S Moser Baer Power & Infrastructures Limited. The two ongoing small hydro projects 1 MW Lang HEP and I MW Tehok HEP which was started during 2001-2002 could not be completed due to fund constraints, the report said. “Nagaland unlike the state of Arunachal Pradesh does not have much hydro potential, but the little that we have could also not be harnessed due to various reasons,” the report said. The state’s installed generation capacity is 27.84 MW only from small hydro electric power projects  against the peak demand of 90 MW.

“The department faces difficulties with operation and maintenance works of the already commissioned small hydro electric projects due to fund constraints,” it said. Such was also the fate of the 24 MW Likimro Hydro Electric Project. However, after its operation and maintenance works was leased out to a private firm M/S NEC Energy Ltd, the project has been operating. During the current financial year, (as on January 2009), LHEP has generated 71.57 MU which has helped the state’s power requirement as well as  resources to a large extent, the report added.

The department has identified about 72 small and micro hydro project areas in the state. Some of the sites the department intends to develop in phases are 7 MW Dzuza HEP (Dimapur), 6 MW Shilloi HEP (Phek), 24 MW Tizu Valley HEP (Phek), 4.5 MW Arachu HEP-I (Phek), 4.5 MW Arachu HEP-II (Phek), 3 MW Arachu HEP-III (Phek), 4 MW Betafo HEP (Kiphire), 3 MW Likimro-II (Kiphire), 3 MW Duilumroi-III HEP (Peren), 5 MW Tapuiki-II (Peren), 1 MW Tulo MHP (Zunheboto), 12 MW Doyang HEP-III (Zunheboto), 5 MW Doyang HEP-IV (Zunheboto), 4 MW Doyang HEP-V (Zunheboto), 5 MW Doyang HEP-VI (Zunheboto), 5 MW Chokla HEP (Tuensang), 5 MW Zungki- Yai HEP (Tuensang), 2.5 MW Lang-II HEP (Tuensang), 8 MW Tizu-Sukhai HEP (Zunheboto), 3 MW Tizu-Loyi (Zunheboto), 15 MW Yai- Horangke HEP (Tuensang), 5-10 MW Tapi (Mon), 1 MW Langa (Zunheboto), 1 MW Mela (Zunheboto), 500 KW Dzu (Kohima) and 500 KW Kerowru (Phek).
