75 houses gutted, property worth Rs 10 cr damaged

IN A devastating fire incident, 75 houses were gutted at New Pansha Village under Noklak Sub Division of the Tuensang district on January 28 last.

Source told The Morung Express that property worth about Rs. 10 crores have been damaged in the fire. About 100 families were affected in the fire.

The place happens to be the native village of the Nagaland’s PHE minister P. Longon.

Source said the fire started from a house by a mentally retarded person which led to the flare- up of about 75 houses including 13 residence of Gaong buras (GB), VCMs residence of VDB secretary, church treasurer, church clerk, church youth worker, two deacons, two assistant deacons, four private residences of medical staff, three private residence of school teachers, twelve private residences of village guard, three Morungs with one Log drum including one rice mill unit, village guard post, and branch post office of the village and many others.

“The villagers fought very hard to stop the fire for more than four hours but it was able to bring the fire under control only after they had pulled down about 20 houses”, said Tongthan Khiamniungan.
Thousands of villagers were rendered homeless and the loss of property was assessed at about Rs 10 Crore. However the loss of human life is not known, sources said.

“This was second major incident of fire in the village within a period of 10 months where the first incident as happened on 12 April 2005 during factional clashes between NSCN (IM) and FGN group,” said Tongthan.

Meanwhile the villagers of Pangsha appealed to the government for help in particular for the fire victims rendered homeless.
