
Dimapur, December 28 (MExN): The Nagaland football team today kick-started their Santosh Trophy campaign on a positive note with a 1-0 win over Uttar Pradesh at the KDSA Playground, Kokrajhar.
Nagaland’s Jersey No 10 Kevisanyu Peseyie scored the solitary goal in the Group-III encounter and won the first 3 points for the team.
Clubbed alongside Arunachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Assam and Goa in Group-III, Nagaland will play Tamil Nadu next on December 30 at SAI STC Ground, Kokrajhar.
Assam is hosting Group III matches for Santosh Trophy 2022-23.
The 76th National Football Championship for Hero Santosh Trophy 2022-23, being played under the aegis of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) across the country, is a premier Men’s national football championship of India started in 1941. It was named after Sir Manmatha Nath Roy Chowdhary of Santosh, the then president of the Indian Football Association.
According to the AIFF, all the affiliated State Associations of Federation are eligible to participate in this championship through the qualifying round which is played across the country.
Winners from each group from the five zones (North, South, East, West, North-east), qualify to the final round which is hosted in a central venue awarded to each zone on a rotational basis with either of the two qualified teams from the zone winning the right to host the finals.
Following the group phase, top two teams from each group qualify to the final round where the teams are again split into two groups of five teams each.
The top two teams from each qualify for the semi-finals and the winners contest in the Final for the silverware
