
Peren, December 10 (MExN): The 7th edition of the Winter Carnival cum Orchid Festival commenced at Carnival Village along the Tepuiki River in Peren on December 9. Organized by Progressive Peren (P2), the four-day event will conclude on December 12, bringing together residents and visitors in celebration.
Deputy Commissioner of Peren, Hiazu Meru, the inaugural guest, commended the united efforts of Peren’s residents and the organizers for fostering community spirit. He emphasized the potential of tourism as a rapidly growing industry and expressed optimism about Peren Town earning a place on Nagaland’s tourist map. Meru encouraged collaboration between the local population and the District Administration to elevate Peren District’s profile.
The event also welcomed retired Commissioner Secretary Khrienuo C. Metha as the honored guest. Following the inaugural ceremony, Meru officially opened the Winter Carnival by lighting the carnival lamp, while Metha inaugurated the Orchid Festival.
The first day featured a variety of competitive events, including a ward-wise tug-of-war, strongman contest, snail-eating competition, and orchid competition, which drew enthusiastic participation.
The inaugural program, hosted by Progressive Peren Director Ngautube R. Champak, began with a prayer led by Fr. Thomas, Parish Priest of St. Paul Church, Peren Town. ADC Peren, Keyirangding Hegui, delivered the keynote address, and a special melody was performed by Kewizin Domta.
