85% of HIV/AIDS through sexual route

Kohima, June 26 (DIPR): Project Director of Nagaland State AIDS Control Society Dr. Niephi Kire has said that the mode of transmission of HIV AIDS, is the sexual route accounting for more than 85%. He said this while addressing a consultative workshop on drug abuse and illicit trafficking today at Hotel Japfü in observance of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking. “Drug abuse results in social, physical and emotional harm and it is important for the user to be treated and given service,” he said. Stating that there is a definite relation between drug abuse and HIV, the project director pointed to the need for thorough deliberation on the issue. Kire informed that there are 54 Targeted Intervention programmes in the state till date. Harm-reduction needs to be known so that intervention activities can be carried out, Dr. Kire said.

Superintendent of Narcotics Imcharenla while highlighting issues of drug trafficking in Nagaland, urged NGOs and social organizations to continue their efforts in raising awareness about the drug menace so drug trafficking can be controlled. Dwelling on the status of de-addiction and rehabilitation centers in Nagaland, District Social Welfare Officer Atoli said the NGOs which are facilitated by the state Social Welfare department and funded by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment include Prodigal Home, Youth Mission, Bethesda Social Youth Welfare Centre, Kripa Foundation Youth Centre, Operation Dawn and Shalom Youth Centre.
