8th Nagaland Veteran Football Tournament underway at Phek

Our Correspondent Phek | April 7   The 8th edition of Nagaland Veteran Football Tournament made a colourful start today at Phek town under the aegis of Nagaland Veteran Football Association (NVFA) and Phek District Veteran Football Association (PDVFA) as host.   Inaugurating the tournament, Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu, Deputy Chairman State Planning Board, Nagaland termed the platform of veteran football tournament as a golden opportunity for the veteran players to showcase their never-ending talents and also to explore each other’s districts, culture and traditions and develop the feeling of oneness and strengthen unity and brotherhood.   He stressed on the need to organize more such events – be it games and sports or social events – where Nagas can come closer and reason together.   Informing that the state government is giving highest priority for promotion of sports in the state, Azo said the state government has already affiliated many disciplines in the national levels, such as cricket, wrestling, football, volleyball, archery and urged upon the sports lovers to be dedicated, sincere and committed to excel at the higher level.   Azo acknowledged former chief minister T.R. Zeliang for contributing a huge amount towards this tournament and also the head of departments for their generous contribution for the success of the tournament.   Earlier, the lighting of tournament torch was done by Nuchita Soho and Yeveyi Sapu.   So far, six districts viz., Dimapur, Wokha, Kohima, Mokokchung, Tuensang and Phek have turned up for the tournament. It will conclude on April 11.  

Wokha, Mokokchung register wins on opening day

  Wokha and Mokokchung registered wins on the inaugural day of the Nagaland Veteran Football Tournament here on Friday.   Wokha defeated Dimapur 3-1 in the first match with C. Chinethung Lotha scoring a brace. Mhonbemo added the other while the lone goal for Dimapur came through Limawati.   In the other match, Ripamayang scored a hat-trick as Mokokchung thumped Phek 4-0. Capi John was the other goal scorer for Mokokchung.   In another match, Wokha registered another win edging Kohima by a solitary goal. PT Mhomtsoe scoring the only goal to give his team two wins on day 1.   April 8 fixture: Mokokchung vs Tuensang Dimapur vs Kohima Phek vs Tuensang
