NINE POLICEMEN of the 9th IRB from Nagaland were killed on the spot, while another 9 were seriously injured in a landmine blast planted by naxalites in Chattisgarh this morning at around 9:00 am.
The incident took place about 180 KM away from their Battalion Headquarter, along the Chattishgarh-Andhra Pradesh border, when the personnel of 9th IRB ‘E’ Coy were returning to their battalion headquarter in a truck, after patrolling the area.
According to reports, the tragic incident took place in the naxal-infested Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh in Kottacheru area over 500 km from the state capital Raipur.
Speaking to The Morung Express over phone Chattisgarh police also said that about 9 personnel had been killed and another nine seriously injured.
The Naga battalion has been pressed into service by the Chhattisgarh government here for anti-naxal operation in Bastar region and the incident took place when they were proceeding to one such combing operation, police said.
Confirming the report IGP (INT) MV Chakesang said that some of the 10th IRB jawans has been killed on the spot, while about 9-10 of them seriously injured when the landmine exploded in a truck in which they were traveling.
Because of poor communication, details of casualties could not be obtained till the filing of this report.
The dead bodies and the injured personnel have been shifted to Raipur by helicopter, the Nagaland state police official said.
This is the second major incident in Chattisgarh after the Naga IRB personnel were sent to the naxalite-infested state.
Last year, one personnel from the same battalion was killed in a similar landmine blast.
