
Dimapur, April 1 (MExN): A one day workshop on conservation of indigenous Mahseers will be conducted by Anglers Association Nagaland (AAN) in association with Mahseer Trust London, at Hotel Accacia Conference Hall, Dimapur on April 9, from 2PM onwards. The resource person for the workshop will be Steve Lockett, Vice Chair, Masheer Trust, London who has been involved in river and fish conservation issues, from local communities to Govt. level, in India, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. Mahseer are fresh water fish native to northern India and the Himalayan region. There are several species of Mahseer found in Nagaland which are being fished to extinction by rampant use of chemicals and dynamites, informed AAN in a press release. The state has also declared Chocolate Mahseer (Neolissochilus hexagonolepis) as State Fish, it said. During the workshop, there will be participation from department of Fisheries and other stake holders and the AAN will also present a brief on different conservation activities carried out to protect and conserve the local river systems, it added. A presentation on different species found in Nagaland and their present status will be given by fishery department. After the workshop, there will be an open interactive sessions with the anglers and other participants.
