As India anticipates witnessing John Mayer live for the first time ever as he takes the stage solo in Mumbai, Nagaland’s own Abdon Mech is set to open for the global icon.

Speaking to The Morung Express in the wake of the official announcement, the acoustic balladeer said, “This kid is opening for his absolute hero.”

At the risk of sounding cliché, Abdon confessed the moment means everything to him. “I was a lost kid in college when I discovered his music. I picked up the guitar and started writing because of John. There’s no Abdon without John, simple as that.”

Before the Grammy-winning bluesman takes over, the Mumbai stage will first belong to two of India’s rising independent voices—Abdon Mech and Bengaluru-bred indie rocker Tejas.

Without giving too much away, Abdon admitted he’s both excited and nervous to perform his Sümi Naga song, ‘Noye Lhokuthu Iwu,’ and hopes to have thousands in Mumbai singing along.

The 7-time Grammy-winning guitar virtuoso will be performing at the iconic Mahalaxmi Race Course in Mumbai on February 11, 2026.
