Acharya harps on ‘unity in diversity’

Imphal, March 21 (MExN): Governor of Nagaland PB Acharya has stated that no force can stop India from becoming the greatest Nation in the world if the citizens put the principles of democracy, secularism and unity in diversity into practice.

Taking into consideration the recent address in hindi at the Meghalaya assembly by Meghalaya counterpart Ganga Prasad, Acharya’s statement for secularism and diversity is a significant shift from the RSS-BJP – to which both Governors were affiliated – and the Central Government’s push for hindi as official language, uniform civil code, among others.

Acharya was addressing a one-day intellectual discussion on “Indigenous Culture in North East India” at Jubilee Hall, RIMS, Imphal on March 17 as the Chief Guest.

According to a press release from the PRO to Governor, Acharya observed that people in the country need to change their mindset and acknowledge the richness of the North East and the contributions made by its people.   Unity in diversity, which was the peculiarity of India, “prevails only because of the existence of the principles of secularism and democracy,” Acharya added.

Stressing on respecting and promoting one’s own culture, tradition and values, Acharya also called for preserving, promoting and safeguarding ones rich culture, tradition and language. “They are our identity and describe who we are,” he maintained.

The function was chaired by titular King of Manipur, Leishemba Sanajaoba.

The one-day intellectual discussion on ‘Indigenous Culture in North East India was organised by Indian National Fellowship Centre, Manipur Chapter.
