Excellence is something that does not happen overnight or by accident but it takes long tested time and determination to be outstanding in any field, said Commissioner & Secretary for Finance and Land Resources Department, Y. Kikheto Sema, IAS.
He was speaking as the special guest during the 39th General Conference of Aqahuto Area Students’ Union (AASU) at Shokhuvi village on Friday. The conference is being organized from January 4-6 under the theme, “Envisioning Excellence.”
According to the guest, achieving excellence does not only mean so in studies or one’s profession but also in the way of life based on value and quality. “Our behaviour towards others, being truthful, honest etc in all these, we can envision how to be excellent,” he said. In this connection, he recalled how farmers in Chakhesang area had set up agricultural products for sale in marketing sheds with price tag on each item and leaves it like that and goes to the field without having to sit the entire day for sale. Kikheto said that was an excellent example of how the farmers put their trust on the unknown and unseen travellers or buyers.
He also noted that during his stay in Kohima for almost three decades, Angami organizations were the least in seeking donations and they are highest in buying products from local people. He said such practices were an excellent way of living and should be emulated by others.
Kikheto spoke about five steps to achieve excellence including setting one’s goals higher, self confidence, learning from successful people, hard labour and being adaptable and flexible.
Also speaking about the characteristics of excellence, Kikheto said humbleness was one of the main qualities of a person envisioning excellence followed by attitude. “Excellence is not a skill but it is an attitude,” he added.
Exhorting the students on the key factors to achieve success, he urged them to do ordinary things extraordinarily and not to do different things but to do it differently.
Kikheto discouraged the culture of inviting guests and speakers with the main objective of monetary expectations from them. “In other places, when guests and speakers are invited, the organizers pay them but in Nagaland especially among Sumi community, the guests and speakers have to spent a lot of money,” he pointed out. He said Naga society would also be striving towards excellence in some way if such culture is changed.
