Dimapur | June 11
The Nagaland Police have formulated a security plan to make up for the withdrawal of AFSPA in areas falling under the jurisdiction of 15 police stations in the state. Nagaland DGP, T John Longkumer informed at the press conference in Chümoukedima on June 11 that a “special operations group have been set up to take over the security from the AR.” He informed that Rs 6.5cr has been sanctioned by the Union government specifically for this purpose.
ADGP (Law & Order), Sandeep M Tamgadge further said that the AR will still have presence but not in an operational role. That role has now been taken up by the police.
The government may have shut down check-gates, except the inter-state kind, still there is no guarantee illegal taxation would come to a stop. On this, the DGP admitted to receiving complaints about police personnel collecting money from commercial vehicles. “We have told the CP and the SPs that nobody should be in a checkpost for more than a week because when they are staying in that check gate for years, they develop contacts. We have got complaints and we have taken action,” he said, while claiming that the department has demoted one officer in Kohima.
The DGP was also reminded of the infamous case of the “misappropriated” gold biscuits of September 2021, fuel adulteration and the murder of a youth from Assam in Dimapur in May. Tamgadge said that the investigation on the gold biscuit case is in the “final phase” with the police personnel involved suspended already. “A team is already out of the state to ascertain the place of origin. Departmental inquiry initiated against the delinquent persons. There was no secrecy, department did not try to hide anything,” he claimed.
On perceived inaction of the police on fuel adulteration, the Dimapur Commissioner of Police maintained that there was no question of insincerity, “because in the absence of the lab report we cannot conclude and police cannot submit chargesheet.”
While stating that the state police gas launched a “war on drugs” in 2021, the DGP said that the state police are determined to make a difference.
