With their hands full with belligerent Naxalites on one and serious controversies on the other, Naga IRB jawans in Chhattisgarh are now reported to be fighting an unlikely enemy this time – a malaria typhoid outbreak. 9th IRB jawan Zaviishe of Meluri under Phek district died at Howarh rail station in Kolkata on December 13. The deceased, on his way to Nagaland, was reported to be seriously ill with malaria typhoid when he passed away mid-journey. The remains of Late Zaviishe, who was attached with the ‘Charlie’ company of the 9th IRB, was to leave Kolkata December 14 but could not due to a general bandh that was on in the metro. It was informed that Kolkata police conducted a postmortem on the deceased. His mortal remains reached Guwahati today and are expected to reach his native place, Meluri, late night at the time of filing this report.

Sources from the battalion informed that along with the deceased were two more jawans with malaria typhoid but due to the serious nature of their condition, they were immediately admitted into a hospital at Kolkata itself. Officers also, on condition of anonymity, informed that there is an outbreak of the water-borne disease in the 9th IRB camp and cases are reported to be high, with Zaviishe’s death coming as the latest mortality. Measures are being taken by the Chhattisgarh government to curb the outbreak however cases continue, sources said. However, medical personnel are rendering best effort in treating the jawans, it was added.
