Dimapur, October 28 (MExN): As a follow-up of the Crop Contingency Plan for drought and also in commemoration of 75 years of India’s Independence ‘Bharat Ka Amrut Mahatsav’, the Department of Agriculture, Nagaland carried out distribution of Rabi seeds during the month of October.
With the State witnessing drought-like situation this year due to delayed and erratic rains, agriculture and horticulture crops under jhum were adversely affected leading to poor germination and wilting of standing crops.
Wet terraced rice cultivation in the foothills has also been affected due to deficient monsoon rains in all the districts causing delay in land preparation and sowing ultimately abandoning the fields in some parts of the foothills, the department observed.
In this regard, the department stated that a Crop Contingency Plan was prepared by the Agriculture Department to compensate for the drought with input support to the farmers during Rabi season. Seeds of boro paddy, maize, field pea, lentil, wheat, mustard, winter vegetables, etc, funded from various Centrally sponsored schemes (CSS) such as NFSM, ATMA, etc. were dispatched to all the districts and sub-division as per the Agro-Ecological Situation from the Department’s Central Store, Dimapur, during October 2021, which have been duly received, the department informed.
