Agri students in villages to gain practical skills

Dimapur, August 7 (MExN): As part of the Rural Agricultural Work Experience Programme (RAWEP), 55 Agri. final year students of NU: SASRD, Medziphema campus were placed in six villages – Lasumi, Zapami, Kami, Lekromi, Pfutseromi and Kikruma – under Pfutsero RD block of Phek district on August 5.  

Hewoto Sema (DAO Phek), Imti (SDAO), Shetalo (AO) from District Agricultural Office, Phek and Dr. KK Jha (Associate Prof. & RAWEP coordinator) from NU: SASRD, Medziphema campus led the team for placing the RAWEP students in the selected villages. A meeting was organized in each of the villages, where the students were given warm welcome by the respective Village Council Chairman in the presence of Pastor, VDB Secretary, GB, youth leaders as well as host farmers, informed a press release from Dr. KK Jha.  

It was informed that RAWEP students will stay in the villages for a period of three months to execute the practical field activities.  

RAWEP is an educational process that aims to hone the skills of the students, not only in the agricultural sector but also in the all-round personality development through strengthening of interpersonal relations and communication skills, problem solving, teamwork, and character development, according to the release.  

During their stay in village, the release said, students gain in-depth practical experiences by conducting various field activities prioritising the needs of the host farmers, baseline survey of the village as well as the selected host farmer’s agricultural activities. They also organize exhibition as well demonstrations to show the benefits of adopting improved agricultural technologies in farmer’s field condition.  

RAWEP students also enrich their knowledge from the indigenous technical knowledge possessed by the farmers and get technical guidance from the subject experts (SEs) for Crop and Livestock production, Plant protection, Soil management, Use of improved farm implements, Socio economic analysis, marketing  as well as Transfer of Technology (ToT), it added.  

RAWEP is jointly organised by the NU: SASRD and the Department of Agriculture, Government of Nagaland.
