Agriculture is the mainstay of our economy: Governor

Governor PB Acharya today said that agriculture is the mainstay of “our” economy. “Our strategy is to increase production and productivity with suitable technologies in the farming sector,” he said in his address on the floor of the House.  

During 2015-16, the aim was to achieve 6.81 lakh metric tons of food grains production with productivity level of 2, 270 kg per hectare, he said while expressing happiness that the target was surpassed.  

He also expressed pride that Nagaland was awarded the Geographical Indication Registry for Naga Tree Tomato.

Under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), 88 Pack Houses were being taken up. Under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Jojana, 220 units low cost mushroom infrastructures were developed, he added.  

Meanwhile, the Governor informed that the Sericulture Department is implementing Integrated Sericulture Development Project funded by Ministry of Textiles, Government of India in all the districts of the state covering a total area of 800 acres under Mulberry, Eri and Muga varieties.  

he Land Resources Development Department is taking up rubber plantation on a large scale in the state under the Integrated Watershed Management Programme.  

A comprehensive plan has also been prepared to develop 5000 hectares of coffee plantation in Nagaland in the next five years under IWMP in collaboration with the Coffee Board of India, he said.
