The Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM) today locked down the shutters of two telecom service providers’ offices in Mokokchung town after they failed to work on improving their services as demanded by the apex organization. Reliance Jio Infocom Ltd and Vodafone Idea Ltd offices were shut down by AKM and their shutters sealed.

It may be recalled that AKM had earlier on May 6 written to four telecom service providers in Mokokchung including BSNL, Jio, Vodafone Idea and Airtel to “restore proper internet services” in the district. Again, on June 24, AKM shot a terse letter to the four telecom service providers demanding “immediate restoration of services” within 7 days with a caution that AKM would be “bound to take stern necessary action” in the event of the service providers failure to comply.

AKM leaders said that BSNL and Airtel services have improved since and that their representatives have informed the AKM office of the same. However, Jio and Vodafone Idea not only failed to improve their services but also failed to offer any assurance on the matter and, therefore, AKM shut down their outlets in Mokokchung in public interest. AKM leaders claimed that they were compelled to initiate the measure today owing to mounting public pressure and informed that the two offices locked down will not be allowed to reopen unless and until their services improved.
