The last day of the ongoing AKM’s 67th general conference here at Changtongya today saw multi-facet orientation of students through workshops divided into three different groups and technical sessions. In the different sessions, resource persons from various walks of like gave talk on different topics such as civil services, technical profession, and entrepreneurship and media.
Besides, the students were oriented on “Importance of Choosing a Right Career” and “Personality and Soft Skills Development.” It culminated with a joint session where the whole panel had an interactive session with the students and clarified their varied doubts and queries.
Not to be served but to serve
Speaking in a session on civil services, Sentilong Ozukum, EAC Monyakshu, Mon said that there is a need for rectifying the concept of government services in Nagaland. Using the biblical concept of leadership, he urged the students to have a heart to be a ‘servant.’
“It is not about how much persons are serving under you, but how much you are serving,” Ozukum said exhorting the students seeking jobs in government sector to “bring about atleast a change in the system.” He also told the students not to be disheartened with failures but to preserve till their objectives are reached. Success is summation of many failures, he maintained.
Smart techniques for students
EAC Tuensang, Nukshimatong while advising the students on career in civil services said that around 90% of the candidates sitting for competitive exam in Nagaland often do not have any idea about even the syllabus. “Be thorough with your syllabus first,” he said, further telling the students that revision and making one’s own notes are added advantage. Practise and revise previous questions and maintain a schedule, he added.
Answering queries about correcting negative marking in the exams, he compared it to a cricket batsman – who plays the easy balls and blocks the dangerous ones. The smart technique for MCQs is to mark the ones you are sure of first and later analyse the rest depending on time, he said.
Speaking on personality and soft skills, K Wabangla Imchen, Asst Prof (HoD), Department of Management, C-Edge College Dimapur said that soft skill is equally important as hard skill. She also said that work ethics and professionalism are some skills “we” lack. Imchen also called for inculcating and cultivating positive attitude and empathy among the youth.
The other resource persons were Limalenden Longkumer, President, Mokokchung Press Club; Yutsung Imchen, Principal, Model Higher Secondary School, Mokokchung; and Watila Longkumer, Proprietor, Naro Ki on Entrepreneurship and Media; Er Inmameren, Executive Engineer Feeders Road Division Tuli on Technical Profession; and Amba, Development & Policy Advisor and Executive Director, SDFN on Importance of Choosing a Right Career.
A presentation on Indian Armed Force was also presented by Major Himanpur of 44 Assam Rifles, Mokokchung. The sessions were moderated by Roselinda Longchar, Inspector of Taxes Nagaland; Anenla Jamir, AIR Kohima; and Limasenla, Asst Prof, Jubilee Memorial College.
