AKMWC urges govt to operationalise Dimapur FSL, revive Kohima unit

KOHIMA, NOVEMBER 1 (MExN): The Association of Kohima Municipal Wards Council (AKMWC) has urged the State Government to expedite the Nagaland Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Dimapur to full operational capacity and to either establish a new FSL in Kohima or revive the erstwhile FSL in the State capital with adequate manpower.

In a representation to the Home Commissioner, AKMWC expressed serious concern over the delay in forensic response following the alleged murder of a young woman, V Zao, at Old Ministers’ Hill Colony on October 25.

According to the association, the victim's body was discovered and reported to police at around 7 AM, but forensic personnel from Dimapur arrived only after 2 PM for the crime-scene examination. The AKMWC said the delay caused “needless torment and anguish” to the bereaved family, friends and neighbours, pointing to the lack of a forensic facility in Kohima as the primary reason.

Stating that forensic science plays a crucial role in crime-scene management, scientific investigation and collection of court-admissible evidence, the Association said the absence of such facilities in Kohima has long hampered law-enforcement and prosecution, leading to delays in justice delivery.

The AKMWC said it can no longer remain a “mute spectator” and called upon the government to immediately operationalise Nagaland FSL Dimapur to full capacity, and set up a new FSL in Kohima or revive the previous Kohima FSL with adequate personnel.

It further stated that the association is constrained to take all necessary steps to ensure the demands in the interest of citizens of Kohima are met “expeditiously.”
