Mokokchung, October 19 (MExN): The Asetkong Kaketshir Telungjem Mungdang (AKTM) inaugurated a two-day skill development programme on self-sustenance at the Kobulong EAC Subdivision on October 19, with more than 60 youths participating. The programme will conclude on October 20.

AKTM president Bendangkumzuk said the initiative was organised in accordance with a resolution adopted at the organisation’s 43rd general conference.

He said the programme aims to promote self-reliance among youths by imparting practical skills and creating opportunities for self-employment. He added that the community possesses valuable skills, knowledge and resources that can be developed into sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Bendangkumzuk expressed hope that the training would inspire participants to become more skilled, independent and self-reliant.

The AKTM women coordinator said participants are being trained in basket making, preparation of Amzu, a traditional sticky-rice biscuit, tapioca bhujia production and banana chips processing.

She noted that Amzu, a traditional delicacy passed down through generations, is gradually disappearing. Special emphasis has therefore been placed on preserving the culinary heritage while exploring its potential as a marketable local product.

Participants are also receiving training in marketing, photography and video editing to help them promote their products and reach wider markets. Local resource persons are sharing indigenous knowledge and practical expertise during the sessions.

The second day of the programme will feature training in shiitake mushroom cultivation, along with special sessions on business planning, product promotion and establishing marketing linkages through online and offline platforms.

Through the initiative, AKTM aims to equip youths with practical skills, preserve traditional knowledge and encourage entrepreneurship and self-sustenance.
