The state’s Department for Higher Education is confident that by the year 2021 all the colleges in Nagaland would be NAAC accredited.
This was stated in the Annual Administrative Report 2017-18 of Higher Education tabled on the floor of the house by Minister for Higher Education and Technical Education Temjen Imna Along on March 26.
National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is an autonomous body funded by the University Grants Commission, Government of India that assesses and accredits institutions of higher education in India.
The report stated that out of 64 colleges in Nagaland, 21 colleges are NAAC accredited colleges and many colleges have initiated the process of accreditation to progress towards quality and excellence in higher education.
The Department of Higher Education has been able to ensure quality, access and equity through a combination of self and external quality evaluation, promotion and sustenance initiative along with the rest of the country. The Department of Higher Education has also initiated the mandatory assessment and accreditation of higher education in conformity with MHRD, UGC and NAAC guidelines, the report stated.
The report also stated that at present the department is granting assistance in the form of grants-in-aid to private recognized colleges and to a number of other institutions involving an expenditure of Rs. 2,65,00,000.
The objective of grants- in-aid is to provide financial aid to colleges recognized by the state government for augmentation and quality improvement of higher education in Nagaland.
Private colleges in the state have been contributing immensely toward the growth of education in the state as 75% of the students pursuing studies in higher education are enrolled in private recognized colleges, the report informed.
