All elephant corridors on alert after two collisions: NFR

Guwahati, August 10 (MExN): All the elephant corridors within the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) area have been alerted after two elephants collided with freight carrying trains in two separate locations on August 10.

As per an official release, the first incident occurred in the wee  hours of Thursday at around 2:40 am between Chalsa - Nagrakata section (KM 68/3-2) in the Dooars area of the Alipurduar division on NFR.

The second incident was reported from the Digaru – Panbari section (Km 41/1-2) under Lumding division of NFR and occurred around 7:10AM, it said. 

While these two sections were beyond the notified elephant corridors, Railways have taken a serious note of these incidents and have alerted all the elephant corridors within NFR area, it added.

The release from the NFR CPRO further informed that these sections were also not covered by the Intrusion Detection system. 

However due to the success of this system, the Ministry of Railways has sanctioned Rs 77 crore for covering most of the elephant corridors within NFR, it said.  Railway is committed and is always ready to take measures towards protection of wild elephants, it added.
