Alternative Phesama-Kigwema route restored for LMVs

Kohima, July 21 (MExN): The Deputy Commissioner, Kohima today announced the restoration and reopening of the alternative route for light motor vehicles (LMVs) between Phesama and Kisama/Kigwema, which had earlier been affected by landslides.

In a traffic advisory issued on July 21, Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem, NCS, informed that the alternate route is now open to traffic with immediate effect. This update follows an earlier advisory dated July 20.

However, the DC also issued additional cautionary measures for public safety in view of continuing risks in the area. “Vehicular movement on National Highway-2 near Kisama (Landslide affected section) shall not be allowed,” the advisory stated.

It further urged the public to “avoid non-essential journeys as far as possible” and advised against “night journeys.” The advisory added that traffic may be regulated in the event of further mudslides, and commuters were asked to take necessary precautions while traveling in the affected region.

SAPO seeks urgent NH-29 landslide clearance
The Southern Angami Public Organization (SAPO) has written to the Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland seeking immediate intervention for the restoration of NH-29/A-1, which has become impassable due to a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall.

“We are writing to bring to your immediate attention the critical situation on NH-29/A-1, which has been rendered impassable and hazardous due to recent heavy rainfall in the area. The incessant downpour has triggered a significant landslide, resulting in large debris falling from the upper side of the road. This has posed an immense threat to human life, property, and local communities, necessitating prompt action to mitigate potential risks,” the letter stated.

The SAPO requested the Deputy Chief Minister to “immediately intervene in the matter and direct NHIDCL and the appropriate authorities, such as the Public Works Department and Disaster Management Cell, to undertake urgent clearance and restoration works on NH-29/A-1.”

It further urged the government to “issue a cautionary advisory to alert travellers, commuters, and local residents about the hazardous road conditions, ensuring that necessary safety measures are implemented to prevent accidents and damage.”

The letter was signed by SAPO President Tepul Hopovi, General Secretary Tepungosa Sale, and Kevipopi Ltu, General Secretary of the SAPO Technical Committee.
