The recent ruling of the Delhi High court legalizing homosexual acts among consenting adults seems to be the beginning of a malicious attack on our age old family values and ethics. Discussing on the consequences of the ruling of the Delhi court, the Parish Pastoral Council of St. Francis De Sales Church, Kohima unanimously denounced this ruling saying that this step is only the tip of an iceberg that can hit hard against the values of a sound society. In its meeting on Sunday, July 5th 2009, the members expressed the opinion that the decision of the court holds within it a hidden agenda of dragging the country along the lines of some western countries that have legalized not only homosexual acts but went further on to legalise even same sex marriage which is only the other side of the same coin. This effort should be nipped in the bud in order to safeguard the age old understanding that marriage is the union between a man and a woman with the primary goal of raising a family as the basic unit of society.
Christian Holy Scriptures say, “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination” (Leviticus 18:22). Again in another place the Bible says, “Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonouring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie…… For this reason God gave them up to dishonourable passions … men committing shameless acts with men” (Rom 1: 24-27). The council endorsed the teaching of the Catholic Church, following the teaching of the Bible on the matter, that says that homosexual acts, as distinguished from homosexual orientation, is morally wrong. The teaching further clarifies the fact that homosexual acts lack an essential and indispensable finality. Such acts exclude all possibility of transmission of life. As such, such acts are intrinsically disordered and can in no case be approved of. This is the constant teaching of the Church. Therefore, the members urge all right minded citizens of this great country to rise against such an assault on the sanctity of family life in the ruling of the Delhi court and make every effort to safeguard the provisions in the constitution of India that seek to protect marriage and family life based on sound moral principles.
