Nagaland University (NU) Kohima Campus submitted its brief profile to the Chancellor Prof. D.N. Buragohain and Vice Chancellor Prof. B.K. Konwar during their visit to the campus on May 1.
It informed that Kohima Campus was earlier a campus of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Shillong. When Nagaland University came into being with effect from September 6, 1994, NU inherited the following departments from NEHU viz. Education established in 1978, English (1979), Commerce (1981), Geology (1983), History and Archaeology (1988) and Linguistics (1988).
Later on, the erstwhile NEHU Kohima Campus became the interim headquarter of NU since 1994 till it was shifted to its permanent headquarters in 2010 located at Lumami. Thereafter NU Kohima Campus remains one of the campuses of NU as per the Parliament Act of 1989.
Earlier, all the departments of NU Kohima Campus were scattered in the city because NU did not have a compact campus of its own. However, the state government of Nagaland acquired 200 acres of land at Meriema and handed over to NU for establishment of its permanent campus in 2004. In addition, a land measuring 40.1 acres was again acquired in the same location and leased out to NU for possible establishments of School of Engineering Technology and Management (SETAM) which is now operating from Dimapur in hired buildings. This school can be accommodated conveniently in the present building when six PG departments functioning at present will shifted to the new buildings which are now under planning stage.
The NU Kohima Campus Meriema, became functional since 2010 after shifting all the academic departments and administrative office from state capital city to its permanent site at Meriema. The distance from Kohima is 10 kms, from NU Headquarters Lumami via Wokha township is 146 kms and from Dimapur, 85 kms respectively.
After shifting the office of the vice chancellor and registrar from Kohima to Lumami in 2010, this campus has been functioning under the headship of a campus in-charge till 2011.
However, for effective management and faster development of the campus, it is now headed by pro-vice chancellor since March 10, 2011 onward and it is administratively controlled from its Headquarters Lumami.
Currently, all the academic departments and administrative office are functioning in temporary buildings. However, construction of the main library building, some staff quarters and two hostels are under progress at Meriema permanent campus.
Construction plan for permanent academic buildings, administrative block, auditorium, playing field, guest house, health centre etc are also under process as per master plan, according to NU Kohima Campus.
